Rare Disease Day 2024 at NIH Features Remarks from NIH Director & Congressional Caucus Leaders Along with Moving Stories from Patients, Parents, and Researchers–A Summary

Rare Disease Day 2024 at NIH was held on Thursday, February 29, and it was a profoundly moving event attended by 100s in person and over 500 via webcast. There are approximately 10,000 known rare diseases and treatments for only 500. Further, despite each disease being rare on its own, it is estimated that, cumulatively, over 400 million people globally suffer from a rare disease. A rare disease is defined as one that affects fewer than 200,000 people. In addition to numerous plenary presentations, the NIH event featured over 100 posters and exhibits, as well as an art display titled “Beyond the Diagnosis” and films.
